a) In one-to-one tutoring, act as a companion or friend who has asked for help.
b) Familiarity does not mean inadequacy. Have an obvious purpose and plan of action.
c) Two important elements in tutoring:
i) Tutor Empathy - sentiment for the student’s difficulty; and
ii) Tutor acquaintance of Subject- tutor must be capable to give details in terms that the student can recognize and appreciate. The learner will also feel easy admitting his/her deficiencies.
d) Give confidence & active learning.
e) Have the student involved. If you were the educator, what would be the essential subjects to be taught?
f) Be ready to present the "main stuff." The learner has the right to wait for direction when he/she receives tutoring.
g) Offer the material in small units. Ensure and recheck learning. Don’t just inquire, "Do you recognize?" See or hear that they do! Don’t rush the scholar.
h) Be flexible. No one style of tutoring fits all circumstances.
i) Be specific when making assignments for the next sitting.
j) Don't do the students’ work for them. Permit for learning and failure to take place. The aim is independent learning.
k) Visit with Professors/Lecturers when essential.
